This is my first laptop. Its a beautiful machine, and I am a longtime Mac user. I don't intend to write a thorough-going review. More sophisticated users than I will do that and do a much better job, especially as I haven't had it long, and haven't tried 'everything' yet. But I did want to say something immediately about Apple's 9-hour battery life claim.
I have the screen brightness turned down to about half, and, were it any lower, things would be illegible. I turn off Airport when I'm not actually surfing. I have the sleep settings geared to about 3 minutes, and, despite all this, I am not getting much over three hours.
Once I've fully charged it, the helpful battery life icon tells me I have over 9 hours available, but, really, after about 20 minutes without Airport, just playing with settings, and screen savers, etc., it shows under 5 hours. And then, with Airport on, streaming a movie from Netflix, of which I watched 25 minutes, I'm down to about an hour and a half. After which, screening and adding and rearranging things in my Netflix queue, and playing a couple of simple dashboard games, I'm in the red.
Now, I can't see where any of that is so intense as to trip the turbo, or to swallow excessive power, but, at least on mine, it does.
I was prepared for Apple's claims to be overly sanguine, but I assumed that the paid reviewers (at least paid by their publications, and also by being given a model to demo), would be more believably accurate when quoting about 4.5-6.5 hours, depending on use.
But, really, unless I simply have a lemon, I can't see how I could get anywhere near 9 hours unless I fully charged it, then turned off Airport, turned the brightness to the lowest setting, and then that wouldn't matter, because I'd have to let it instantly spin down and sleep. It just might stand up to nine hours of that!
I have given it four stars, because I am genuinely impressed by it so far, and battery life is only one aspect (albeit an important one) of the product. But I strongly advise that you read around on all the impartial (meaning actual everyday user) reviews you can find, and then decide whether your personal brand of 'road warrior' will survive without the option of a spare battery or always available re-charge.
